For many years a free-lance artist, Ben Joel joined the then School of Visual Art as a full-time member of staff in 1989. Ben was Co-ordinator of Painting in the Department of Art in the faculty of the Built Environment , Art and Design until 2008. He completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Art and Design at Curtin in 1984 and a PhD in 2005.
From 1989 until the restructuring of the Department of Art in 2002, Ben Co-ordinated the Painting area and the latterly combined Painting and Printmedia areas as one of the separate streams within the school. Painting and Printmedia amalgamated to form the largest cohort of students in the school, with up to 85 students and 8 staff. On numerous occasions he has acted as Head of the School of Art/Department of Art for both short and long term appointments.
From 2003 Ben spent two years as the Department’s Undergraduate Co-ordinator, continued as a Studio lecturer in Painting and Drawing, ran Tutorial groups, and was a member of two Curriculum Council committees. Ben is a past member of the Board of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and a co-founder of the Nexus Artist’s Gallery Association. Current affiliations include PICA and NAVA (the National Association for the Visual Arts).
Research Interests
Ben Joel's current research explores visual and musical analogies with the structure of particular forms including certain design objects such as the ubiquitous screw. A significant outcome of this work was the exhibition 'Instrumental' at the John Curtin Gallery September- December 2005 which included paintings, drawings, prints and animation projects.
His research is also concerned with the cultivation of productive perceptual models for accommodating enhanced receptivity to works of art (with an emphasis on painting) and the production of artworks which reward such enhanced receptivity.
Teaching - Undergraduate
In 2010 Ben is working as a sessional staff member teaching Drawing to second and third year students.
