Brenda Ridgewell is a lecturer in the Department of Art, Co-ordinates the Bachelor of Art (Jewellery Design) and Post Graduate Diploma in Jewellery Production. She commenced her career as a secondary teacher gained a BA Design (Silver Smithing) WAIT 1982, followed by a Master of Art by Research at RMIT 1997.
As a lecturer in art she has her own continuing practice as an artist specialising in contemporary jewellery. Her jewellery works are exhibited and collected locally, nationally and internationally.

As coordinator of the Jewellery Three Dimensional Studio Brenda has initiated the BA Jewellery Design, a course utilising the expertise of the departments of art and design. This course took first enrolments in 2003 and first graduates in 2005.

Brenda has continued to progress her own practice in contemporary jewellery.

2005 semester two academic study leave allowed her to produce a solo exhibition at Gallery East in Fremantle.


Her practice has been recognised in many ways with the following awards

Research Interests

Brenda’s research focuses on the decorated body, exploring the notions of proxemics and sculptural forms that embellish and interact with the surface and space of the human form.

As a practice based researcher Brenda’s jewellery practice directly enriches her teaching within the department, providing mentorship for students and peers.

In order to maintain a high quality of teaching and learning, Brenda also conducts continuing research into areas of teaching practice,striving toward a new concept, a new way to express the essence of jewellery.
