Carey Curtis is Professor of City Planning and Transport and Director of the research network Urbanet - see http:/urbanet.curtin.edu.au for details about research projects and activities.
Carey is an active national and international researcher. She has won five Australian Research Council research grants, collaborates in two major international research centres (Australasian Centre for the Governance and Management of Urban Transport; OMEGA Centre at University College, London) and a European Union Concerted Research Action: TU1002 ‘Accessibility Instruments for Planning Practice in Europe’. Carey was awarded Curtin University’s Early Career Researcher award in 2007 and again 2009. In 2011 she was awarded ‘best research paper’ by the Faculty of Humanities. She has published over 60 papers, book chapters and books.
Carey is Chair of the International Editorial Board of the Journal ‘Urban Policy and Research’ and a research articles Editor. Carey is a member of the Planning Institute Australia and the UK Royal Town Planning Institute. Carey was elected to the inaugural Board of the World Society of Transport and Land Use Research in 2011.
Carey is a member of the Western Australian Planning Commission's Sustainable Transport Committee and served as Commissioner on the Western Australian Planning Commission for seven years (2003-2010). She played a key role in the State government planning initiative ‘Dialogue with the City' and her research contributions led to the development of the concepts with the Network City Spatial Planning Framework for metropolitan Perth. She also advised on the planning aspects of the new Perth-Mandurah railway within the Perth CBD.
Research Interests
Carey's research interests cover land use planning and transport planning, including a focus on city form and structure, transit oriented development, personal travel behaviour, accessibility planning, institutional barriers to sustainable transport, governance and transport policy.
