David is Associate Professor in Project Management at Curtin University of Technology. He commenced his career as a quantity surveyor before entering academia. He gained his Master in Project Management in 1986 from South Bank University (London), commencing his long involvement in the discipline of project management.
In 1993 David formulated the Master of Project Management at Curtin, which was the first postgraduate university program of its kind in Western Australia. This program was innovative because it was one of the first project management university degrees to be generic, rather than specific to one project industry. In 1999, he reformulated the project management program to create the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Science in Project Management. David is the Course Coordinator for these programs and lectures in project management, cost management, procurement management and risk management.
David has undertaken numerous training and consultancy assignments in project management and risk management. Clients include WA Department of Justice, City of Swan, City of Gosnells, WA Department of Agriculture, Canning Branch of General Practice, Peet & Co, CSR, LandCorp, Water Corporation, Western Power, Institute for Child Health Research, and AUSAID.
David has over 70 publications focusing on project management and risk management (see Publications for further details) and is a Past-President of the Australian Institute of Project Management (WA).
Research Interests
David research's interests focus on project management generally and risk management in particular. He is presently enrolled in a PhD at Queensland University of Technology, researching the topic of project cost contingency. David also has specific research interests in: the concept of project success; the application of risk management processes within projects; and the concept of project complexity. He work has been cited on many occasions in scholarly journals such as Journal of the Operational Research Society, Journal of Management in Engineering, Engineering Management Journal, Long Range Planning, and International Journal of Project Management.
In order to maintain a high quality of teaching and learning, David also conducts continuing research into areas of teaching practice. He is particularly interested in aspects of problem-based learning, learning journals and a social constructivist approach to teaching.
David's research is enhanced by consultancy work, primarily in terms of project management training, working with organisations WA Department of Justice, City of Swan, City of Gosnells, WA Department of Agriculture, East Perth Redevelopment Authority, Canning Branch of General Practice, Peet & Co, CSR, LandCorp, Water Corporation, Western Power, WA Dept of Education, Institute for Child Health Research, and AUSAID.

David is a referee for several scholarly journals such as the International Journal of Project Management, Construction Management & Economics, AIQS Refereed Journal, The Design Journal, Journal of Planning Practice & Research and Journal of Construction Research. He has also acted a referee for conferences as the Australian Institute of Project Management National Conference
His depth of knowledge of project management allowed him to be a key member of a small team that has introduced a web-based project management methodology within Curtin University and help create the Project Resource Centre. He is a Senior Project Coach and has conducted numerous in-house training workshops to enhance the competency of Curtin staff.
In 2004 David was one of the team of four chief investigators (Curtin, Murdoch & Edith Cowan) that successfully won ARC Linkage funding ($1.38m) for the project to research ?optimizing value for money in software development through standardized metrics in the procurement, development and project management phases”. Industrial partners include major organisations such as Australian Defence Industries and the Department of Defence and it is a cross-disciplinary effort involving software engineering, procurement and project management.
