David holds a Personal Chair in Masculinities Studies. He obtained a PhD in 1973 from Cornell University, in the USA, and commenced working at Curtin University in 1974 (when the University was still known as the Western Australian Institute of Technology).
In addition to both teaching and researching in the field of masculinities studies, David has also regularly taught and researched in the areas of literary and cultural studies. He has published work in masculinities studies, literary theory, drama, poetry, and culture, and is on the editorial board of the journal Papers: Explorations into Children's Literature, and the international advisory board of Men and Masculinities, and Genre, sexualité et société. He has also contributed to the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities (Routledge, 2007).
