Dr. Errol H. Tout was Head of Department of Architecture + Interior Architecture in the school of Built Environment at Curtin University of Technology from 2006 to the end of 2008. He has since returned to being a Senior Lecturer. Previously Errol was the Chair of the Science and Technology Stream and Chair of the Design Communication Stream.

Errol completed his Bachelor of Architecture at WAIT in 1983; he received his Master of Architecture from Curtin in 2000 and completed his PhD at RMIT in 2011.

Errol is a registered Architect, has 25 years professional architectural experience including 17 years full time teaching experience.

 

Errol's PhD at RMIT was entitled ‘Spatial Visualization and Representation in Architecture - spatial communication through the use of sound', dealt with the changing nature of the architectural representation, an investigation into using sound as a means of discussing three-dimensional space.

Errol worked for many years as a musician, he has released many albums of original music, produced albums for other artists, written film soundtracks, appeared on a number of compilation albums, performed extensively around Australia and even composed music for orthopaedic surgery videos.

I have received the following awards for my work in Architecture and in Music;

 

“Sir James Carruthers Fellowship Award”       1987

This financed a trip to attend a Guitar Craft Seminar in West Virginia, run by Robert Fripp.

I later attended two more [self financed] Guitar Craft courses January 1990 in Auckland New Zealand and then in December 2009 in Sant Cugat outside of Barcelona in Spain.

The Royal Australian Institute of Architects Architectural Education Prize recognises the significance of architectural education in the promotion and improvement of the built environment. The Prize acknowledges an outstanding contribution in architectural education in one or more areas of: teaching, scholarship, research, leadership and community engagement. Awarded jointly to Steve Parkin and myself
