Prof John Teschendorff

John Teschendorff was born in Melbourne and moved to Perth in 1985, serving as Head of the Curtin University School of Art 1986-1995. He studied at the former Caulfield Institute of Technology (now Monash University), the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the Royal College of Art London.  In 2008 John Teschendorff received the  Australian Council of University Art & Design Schools Distinguished Teaching Award for his lifetime contribution to visual arts education and administration in Australia and SE Asia and in 2009 the Curtin University  Excellence in Teaching Award for Innovation & Teaching in the BA (Art) Honours program. He is a member of the National Gallery of Australia Foundation & of the Collingwood Football Club. 

 John Teschendorff has established an internationally recognised art profile whilst holding senior academic & artistic appointments at Melbourne State College (Coordinator of Studies Art & Design), Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Jerusalem Israel (Artist in Residence 1981) Curtin University (Head School of Art 1987-1995), Canberra School of Art ANU (Artist in Residence 1988), Malaysian Institute of Art Kuala Lumpur (Visiting Professor 1991), Limkokwing University College of Technology Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (Professor & Senior Associate Director 1995-1996), Institut Teknologi Bandung Indonesia (Artist in Residence 2001), Burapha University Chonbori Thailand (Visiting Artist 2003) & Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) Bangkok Thailand (Visiting Professor 2011)

During the 1970's his work as a ceramic artist contributed to the major aesthetic shift in attitudes to this studio practice in Australia.  A move to works on paper and canvas in the mid 1980's now defines his research and studio production.  Teschendorff  has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle (NSW), Perth (WA) and Oxford (UK) He has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions; representing Australia at the 36th Concorso Internazionale della Ceramic d’Arte, Faenza, Italy (1978), in Contemporary Australian Ceramics at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington USA (1981). In 1995 he was selected for Australian Ceramics 1830-1995 a major survey exhibition presented at the Museo Internazionale, Faenza. His work is represented in many major Australian & international public and institutional collections including  National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Victoria,  Australia Council, RCA London, Bezalel Academy Jerusalem, MIA Kuala Lumpur, State Library of Victoria, Regional Galleries in Geelong, Orange, Shepparton, Benalla & Newcastle, Powerhouse Museum, Holmes a Court Collection, Bankwest, University Collections (Melbourne, Darwin, Tasmania, Curtin, Murdoch, Monash and Scripps College Claremont Ca USA), Ross Griffin Homes, Minera IRL Lima Peru and All Saints College Perth. John Teschendorff currently lives and works in Fremantle & is represented in WA by Galerie Dusseldorf.
