Shahed Khan joins Curtin this year as Associate Professor in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning. Shahed has worked in the industry as well as academia for a number of years both in Australia and overseas.He served as the Head of Program (Planning/ Environmental Planning) in the School of Construction, Property and Planning (later in the School of Social Sciences) at the University of Western Sydney.
Prior to that Shahed was part of the core team of ‘Creative Cultures – Cultural Initiatives in Western Sydney’ – a pilot project funded by three levels of government. There he worked with various ethnic community organisations and artsworkers engaged in community cultural development, assessing their training and resource development needs.
Overseas, Shahed began his career as an Architect in the private sector and later taught architecture and planning at the tertiary level while running a private consultancy. He has worked on some major planning projects dealing with urban redevelopment/ physical improvement of squatter settlements. Shahed’s PhD was in the area of housing, focusing on informal settlements in Asian cities.
With a background in architecture and planning, Shahed Khan has an active interest in the areas of planning, sustainability and urban governance. He has produced a number of publications including book chapters, journal articles and refereed conference papers. His current research focuses on issues related to sustainability and the built environment, transit-oriented development, local agenda 21 and planning education. He was also part of the three member research team representing UWS in two recently concluded CRC - Construction Innovation projects.
