Suzette Worden was appointed Professor of Design in 2002. She currently supervises Phd and coursework postgraduate students. She also contributes lectures to undergraduate units. She has previously taught courses on design history, craft history, digital arts and research methods at Brighton University and the University of West of England, Bristol (UWE), UK as well as at Curtin University of Technology.

She is developing collaborative research projects related to Western Australian resources. The 'Wool and Comfort' project is in collaboration with researchers at the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia (DAFWA). The 'Virtual Pit' is an exploration of the use of digital technologies for cultural heritage projects and seeks to make links between Australian Outback and Cornish heritage sites by tracing and documenting evidence of migration and cultural change.

Suzette Worden became involved in digital media projects through involvement in collaborative projects on the use of computers for art and design education. She was Director of CTIAD (Computers in Teaching Initiative - Art and Design) at the University of Brighton from its beginning in early 1996 until March 1998. Before joining Curtin University of Technology in 2002 she was Reader in Digital Media and Director of Research in the Faculty of Art, Media and Design, University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). Research projects at UWE included research for the National Creative Technologies Initiative (NCTI) completed in June 2001 and an AHRB (Arts and Humanities Research Board) funded project, 'Digital Arts Curation: Aesthetics, Participation and Diversity'. She has also published various articles and contributed to books on women and design, furniture, and product design.

Suzette was a Board member of FORM, Contemporary Craft and Design Inc, WA. from 2006 to 2007 and was on of the convenors for the CADE -Computers in Art and Design Education International Conference, held in Perth WA as part of the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (BEAP), 12-14 September 2007.

Research Interests

Suzette Worden's current research considers the Materiality of Design. This brings together a group of research projects examining the historical significance of materials for design and the social implications of technology where the innovative use of traditional materials is combined with the use of new technologies.

The materials currently being researched have a distinct economic and social relevance to Western Australia. These include wool, timber and aluminium. Once a methodology for this first phase of the project is established, the research will be expanded to include other WA materials such gold, pearls, diamonds and other mining and mineral products. This research investigates the creative possibilities of design investment in traditional materials and also seeks to define the economic and social significance of the consumption of the resultant products and artefacts.
