Tod is a Research Fellow in the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute. Tod moved to Curtin in 1999 to undertake a PhD which he finished in 2005. He previously worked in the Curtin Sustainable Tourism Centre, before beginning a Targetted Research Fellowship in 2010.

Tod has research interests in both tourism and in Indonesian Studies. Tod’s interest in tourism began when he was employed to administer and provide input into a range of projects within the Curtin Sustainable Tourism Centre. He has worked on a range of projects including the economic, social and environmental values of tourism, heritage tourism, and was involved in the development of The Valuing Places Toolkit, an easy to use toolkit that measures the visitor expenditure due to a particular tourism resource. Tod is currently working on developing a destination model for the Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia’s northwest coastal region. Tod has worked with a variety of organisations when undertaking research including the Sustainable Tourism CRC, Department of Environment and Conservation, Tourism WA, the City of Albany, and the Heritage Council. All of the projects have been collaborative with researchers from Curtin University of Technology and other universities.

Tod also has research interests in Indonesia, in particular Indonesian cultural policy, Indonesian contemporary art and popular culture, and cultural citizenship. Tod’s doctoral dissertation, which received a commendation from the chancellor, was on Indonesian cultural policy and he has presented numerous papers on issues relating to Indonesian culture, the arts and politics.

Research Interests

Tod is involved in a range of projects relating to both tourism and Indonesia.

Tod’s tourism research focuses on the social and economic impacts of tourism, including measuring and monitoring human use. Tod is currently involved with six tourism research projects including: developing a tool to measure the economic, social and environmental values of tourism to natural areas: measuring the economic impacts of tourism; developing The Valuing Places Toolkit, which will enable users to measure the expenditure due to their particular tourism resource; developing resources to assist communities develop heritage tourism opportunities; and developing a destination model for the Ningaloo coastline. The destination model will incorporate social, environmental and economic data into a GIS planning tool for the region.

Tod’s tourism research has involved collaboration with a variety of different organisations including the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre, Department of Environment and Conservation (WA), the Heritage Council (WA), Tourism WA, and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources.

Tod is also continuing his research into cultural policy in Indonesia that he began during his doctoral studies. Indonesian cultural policy, which was previously highly centralised under the Suharto regime, was decentralised in 2001. Indonesia now has an array of cultural policies, ranging from productive relationships with local groups, to no cultural policy at all in some regencies controlled by Islamic political parties. Tod is also undertaking research on cultural citizenship in Indonesia and has written articles and book chapters on popular culture, contemporary art and decentralisation in Indonesia.
