Research Interests

I'm interested in how people design their environments including how they learn. This brings together conventional science, ethology, social sciences, cognitive neuro-science and systems understanding and bridges Technology, Art, Business, IT and Governance

I've three areas of research interest as represented in my publications (see www.love.com.au):

  • complex socio-technical systems design (i.e design that involves people and technology), including the application of power in legitimated governance and crime
  • how individuals, groups and societies design  their environments (products, systems services, technologies, organisations, social programs, laws and governance, strategies) and how to improve their design activities (social and technical activities, ways of thinking, roles of emotions and cultural factors)
  • improving learning -  particularly in postgraduate supervision, eportfolios and elearning systems and critical systems thinking

Research Projects

Current projects:

  1. Crime prevention in the Southern Rail corridor
  2. State of understanding and application of Design Out Crime strategies in product design in Australia
  3. Reducing Crime and anti-social behaviour of young people in the environs of the Perth etropolitan rail system
  4. Counter-intuitive identificaiton of best design practices in sustainability design
  5. Application of ethological perspective to understanding design and innovation in humans
  6. Identification of extensions to Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety as they apply to transfer of power in complex socio-technical systems (extends Ashby's Law into social realm).
  7. Counter-intuitive ethological analysis of roles of emotion and feeling in the design and use of designed products, systems, services and organisations.

Teaching - Undergraduate

None

Teaching - Postgraduate

I am primarily employed to supervise postgraduate students, undertake research and provide research training in the faculty. I specialise in working with postgraduate students with overseas backgrounds and with students involved in design research that is cross-disciplinary or systems-based.  This usually involves a multi-disciplinary approach across the 850 fields of design. Design research is intrinsically difficult for postgraduate study because of its  conceptual complexity and multidisciplinarity. I have developed severla approaches to addressing these problems that have resulted in good compleiton rates and times to completion.

I am always interested in undertaking supervision of postgraduate students with interesting design research projects.

I currently supervise:

7 PhD students
