Senior Communication Designer, The Brand Agency
BA Arts (Design)
I chose Curtin because at the time it was the only WA university that offered a Bachelor’s degree in art and design.
I really enjoyed my time at uni. Surrounding myself with like-minded people who were passionate about design and all things creative further encouraged me to develop my skills and explore my creative side. My lecturers and tutors were really helpful. They all had industry experience and were more than happy to share that knowledge.
Preparing for graduation was a great highlight for me. To be able to showcase my designs from three years of hard work in front of people from Perth’s design industry, my fellow classmates, friends and family, really demonstrated the hard effort, late nights, and underlying passion that really goes in to achieving an industry standard folio of work.
I was lucky enough to be able to work part time in a small graphic design studio whilst studying in my final year at Curtin. After graduating I became their in-house designer for another two years before moving to one of Perth’s top advertising agencies, The Shorted Group. Following my tenure there I moved to Marketforce where I continued to refine my skills for around seven years, being able to design for some of Perth’s largest creative clients. In April 2007 I moved to The Brand Agency as a Senior Communication Designer. The move enabled me to work across a varied range of design practice, creating and managing brands from both a local and national client base.
My degree definitely helped my career path. Without my degree I don’t think industry people would have even looked at my folio. I would – and have – recommended Curtin to other would-be designers. For those with a passion for design, or looking to develop their creative side, I think it’s a must to get into the industry.
