Dani Andree

Art Technician
Bachelor of Arts (Fashion and Textile Design)

I chose to study at Curtin because the school had a reputation for offering critical and competitive programs that required both theoretical and practical engagement.

The degree I chose to study at Curtin was extremely challenging, but very rewarding. In terms of responding to constant intellectual stimulation as well as completing the coursework, the level of commitment required was off the scale. I'm confident in saying I have a high level of process-based and problem-solving skills now because of this.

Following my graduation, I worked as a graduate-in-residence in the department of Art at Curtin in 2008, and as a technician and sessional tutor in Fashion and Textiles in 2009. Whilst at Curtin I assisted in the production of electronic readers for the Textiles major. In 2010, I commenced my current job at Edith Cowan University as an Art Technician and sessional tutor across contemporary fashion and visual arts (textiles). I have assisted in the writing of four new textiles units that will commence there in 2012. I presented work at the Perth Fashion Festival in 2009 as a part of the project: A Touch of Wool I. In 2010 I participated in the group exhibitions: Where I Was and They, both at Free Range Gallery. Currently I am completing honours in Contemporary Art, with the aim to pursue further postgraduate studies in art. I am also continuing to make art collaboratively.

The staff at Curtin opened my mind to what is possible and gave me the confidence to nurture an inquisitive approach to dealing with materials. I'm so lucky to have had the guidance of Pam Gaunt and Anne Farren to encourage this, but then always ask me why. They both expected so much, and this permanently instilled in me the value of what it means to be critical of my own practice and the practices of those around me.

Since graduating, I believe the degree has helped me every day. I would recommend studying this degree at Curtin to anyone interested in fashion and textiles because the staff are brilliant and the equipment on offer is constantly being added to, this is what makes the degree so competitive.
