2nd Year Student
Bachelor of Arts (Urban and Regional Planning)

Through industry research, and input from experts working within the planning industry, I was advised that Curtin provides a highly recognised degree (both on a national and international level) preparing students for all aspects of their future professional career.

One of the most attractive qualities the Curtin planning course offers is the diverse range of learning activities and units offered. Each lecturer has their own academic specialty, plus professional industry experience, and I believe Curtin understands the importance of student exposure to different teaching methods and techniques.

So far I have enjoyed meeting and working with new lecturers, Curtin staff and students. I have particularly enjoyed the ‘Graphics and Design’ unit in addition to ‘Urban Analysis’. Both these units give students opportunities to experiment, create, design and present planning issues on exhilarating topics, such as the ‘Perth Waterfront’ and the ‘Northbridge Night Time Economy’.

Having a design background (Diploma of Building Design and Technology), has given me the opportunity to expand what I have already learnt rather than forget it, by adapting skills and knowledge to interesting tasks within selected units. Within six months of starting the course I was able to change roles within my current company, moving from ‘Designer Drafter’ to ‘Planning Consultant’ in my current job.

All Curtin staff involved in the course are industry experts and offer different teaching techniques. I believe the Curtin staff place significant focus on broadening the students’ ability to adapt and learn in different environments. I have particularly enjoyed learning from Dr Shane Greive and Mr Kent Turkich. Dr Greive has a fantastic ability of teaching on students’ level, while Mr Turkich provides written communication help and ideas on a personal scale.

I highly recommend this degree to others who are thinking of broadening their knowledge and skills in any of the areas concerning, property development, local government, property and planning law, and private planning consultancy. The degree will provide students with a deep understanding and ability to plan the needs for urban and regional cities, towns and communities.
