Graduate 2011
Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management and Economics) Honours Stream
The main reason I chose to study at Curtin University is because it is the only university in Western Australia which offers the Construction Management and Economics (CME) degree.
My overall impression of Curtin University is that it is a very modern, dynamic and practical university which offers industry recognised and sought after degree programs.
My major highlight during my time at Curtin University would have to be the great group of fellow students I have met and the industry contacts I have made both for now and into the future. The CME Department annual student awards and prizes I have won have definitely been a fellow major highlight.
I have been involved in numerous opportunities during my time as a student at Curtin University outside the scope of what I believe to be the typical university educational experience including; site visits to well renowned construction projects, presentations by high profile construction industry representatives, professional industry association events and several social activities.
My degree helped me obtain my current employment shortly after commencing my first year at university and establish numerous other industry contacts.
Without doubt, the constant enhancement of my theoretical course knowledge as I have advanced throughout my degree has been very influential in my successful career progression (and vice versa).
Staff within the CME department typically have extensive construction industry experience both in Perth and overseas and apply this practical knowledge to the classroom. The majority of staff is easily approachable and more than willing to help both during and outside of class hours. The Head of the CME department, Peter Bullen, has gone above and beyond his role as my honours dissertation supervisor to make the experience of my final year research project extremely worthwhile.
I would definitely recommend this degree to others who want an exciting and rewarding career in the construction industry. The degree typically has a small student number intake ensuring a very close knit and practical learning experience. It also offers a broad range of well remunerated career opportunities. Many of these opportunities are available to CME students before completion of the degree giving graduates a head start to their career.
