Visiting Professor of English Language and Cultural Studies at a Korean university
Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics)

I decided to undertake postgraduate study at Curtin because I had already developed relationships with a number of the faculty from my undergraduate studies. Initially, I selected Curtin for undergraduate study because it was the only university in WA to offer a concentration in Korean; my area of interest.

I did not just build professional relationships with the staff at Curtin, but also built what I would consider friendships that will last. Without the guidance of my MA supervisor - Dr. Chris Conlan - I would not have realised the opportunities that lay in front of me professionally.

The MA (Applied Linguistics) program I was involved in had such a diverse and closely-knit student body that it was a study in itself. Academically, not only were we exposed to professional development in the formal sense, but we also had the gratifying aspect of having access to firsthand accounts from a number of different regions including Sub-continental Asia, North-east Asia, South-east Asia and the Middle East. Having such diverse and easily accessible information sources made the course all the more valuable in my opinion, plus it gave the added benefit of building close friendships with like-minded professionals in a variety of countries.

The skills supplanted through the MA (Applied Linguistics) program gave me the abilities to become:

Immediately after graduation I returned to Korea where I undertook a position as a curriculum developer for a provincial education board. I have since moved on to undertake my current position as Visiting Professor of English Language and Cultural Studies at a Korean university. Both of these positions would not have been possible if it were not for the skills bestowed onto me at Curtin
