Bachelor of Arts (Art) (Honours)
I chose to study at Curtin because the Department of Art had a very balanced approach to studying art where by theory, technical skill and professional practice were valued equally.
Each student was encouraged to be self-driven and innovative whilst being involved in collective projects with their fellow peers. Here, there was an emphasis on topical discussion, debate and the practice of critically assessing your own practice; skills that become indispensible after a student has graduated. Lecturers that stood out within the Curtin Department of Art include Annette Seeman, John Teschendroff and Ric Spencer. Words from these lecturers still ring true today.
As a highlight, I would have to say the series of 'Mattereality' exhibitions which were held at the Moores Building between 2006 and 2007 were an incredible opportunity to gain professional experience in not only the running of an exhibition, but a true challenge to the students exhibiting works. Its true to say that every single student involved in these exhibitions has gone on to use this experience in further art projects.
Since graduating my career path has been as follows:
Solo exhibition in Sydney at Harrison Galleries(2007); solo exhibition in Perth at Perth Galleries (2008); Moved to Melbourne (2008); Solo exhibition at Helen Gory Galerie Melbourne (2008); Invigilator and Install Assistant at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2008-2010); Casual Tutor at CAE, Melbourne (2009-2010); Solo Exhibition at Helen Gory Galerie Melbourne (2009); Involvement with various festivals in Melbourne including Design Festival 2009, Melbourne Art Fair 2008 and 2010); Melbourne L'oreal Fashion Festival Cultural Program (2010); Move to London (2010); Winner of the Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship (2010); Currently Aritst in Residence at Draw International, France; Solo exhibition at Perth Galleries opening Oct 22nd 2010.
Has my degree helped my career path? Absolutely. There is a drive the lecturers looked to instill in all the students to keep challenging their art practice and seeking out opportunities to get involved with the arts community.
I believe the Curtin Art Degree is still the most comprehensive Art Degree in Western Australia, and it has the potential to provide a firm foundation for both a professional arts career and postgraduate study within Australia or overseas.
