Craig Shepherd
Planning Manager – Metro South-East, Dept of Planning
Bachelor of Arts (Urban and Regional Planning)
I have been impressed as how Curtin has transformed itself over the years into a first class university. It is extremely professional and the research data available is extremely helpful for the growth of students.
As part of my fourth year, the class went on an overseas trip to Malaysia and Singapore. This is undoubtedly my highlight of the course as it provided an international perspective on planning and the growth of cities. In addition, the class comradeship that grew over the 4 years sets the graduates up for life-long friendships.
I started working in the industry during my second year of the degree at TPG Town Planning and Urban Design. From there I moved to Planning Solutions (Aust) Pty Ltd and worked there for approximately 1 year. In 2005 I joined the City of Nedlands in the planning team. I have worked at the City for almost 5 years and have built up to obtaining the position of Senior Strategic Planning Officer. I have now taken a position at the Department of Planning commencing in July 2010 as Planning Manager – Metro South-East.
My degree absolutely helped my career path. The degree is specific in giving an understanding of the planning system, the separation of powers and the various disciplines involved. The degree has been tailored and amended as the industry changes and I would not have been able to obtain the positions I have without this knowledge.
The members of staff at Curtin have, or still do, work in the planning industry. This means that the literature being taught is given a practical perspective and allows for case studies to be discussed. The lecturer who stands out the most for me is Prof. David Hedgcock. He was an outstanding teacher and also helped in career development early on in my studies.
