Student Profile
Scott Siekierka
Science Teacher at Scotch College
Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education)
Curtin provided the opportunity to study at Western Australia’s premier university. With a community of 40,000 local and international students, a course of study undertaken not only provided exclusive skills in relation to my degree, it also provided a vast awareness of the social skills required to succeed in life.
Having previously undertaken an initial undergraduate degree at another university, the comparisons between the two universities do not stack up. Curtin provided a seamless transition into my ‘resurrected’ studies while offering that community feel so often desired once walking out of a lecture theatre and or classroom. The transition between work and play was very distinctive; a feeling quite hard to obtain once entering the labour market. The advantage Curtin provides has me contemplating a return for postgraduate studies.
The Professional Practice, culminating with an Internship provided the greatest understanding of my role as a teacher in the profession. The chance to identify my strengths and weaknesses was confronting, as it was enlivening. However, the chance to discuss these practices with your peers in an open platform driven by industry professionals provided feedback that ensured I, as were all, was on the right path.
My career path has been extremely short having secured a position at Scotch College, Perth commencing on the 19th July 2010. I have control of 5 separate Science classes from Years 8 – 10 making for an extremely full, although entertaining week.
Without undertaking the pre-service education degree at Curtin there is no possible way I could have achieved in the field of teaching. The degree offers a specialist understanding in your chosen major underscored by consistent and informed teaching skills that are easily adaptable to society.
An education degree requires the exclusive understanding on how best to, firstly, understand the students in whom you are in contact with; and secondly, provide enough knowledge for those students to understand the concepts required whilst garnering an interest surrounding the subject by where those students yearn for more. Curtin University education staff personified their teachings providing a friendly and knowledgeable demeanour.
Teaching is a profession that makes all other professions. That said no two days are the same. If you want to inspire, have a passion for learning and want to make a difference to the lives of young people, then teaching is definitely the career for you. Curtin positively differs by providing a specialist understanding in the major teaching area you wish to undertake in your education degree. Thus highlighted by units taken are in conjunction with other students in varying science, math, English and art degrees.
