Communications Officer (Advocacy), UNICEF Malaysia
Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication), majoring in Journalism and Public Relations. International student from Malaysia

I found out about Curtin through my local college (in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), LimKokWing Institute of Technology (as it was then known). The availability of courses suited my needs. Also the opportunity to study abroad was attractive.

The degree provided a good mix of theoretical and vocational subjects, and formed a good foundation for pursuing a career in communications. The lecturers and staff were mostly pretty inspiring and made classes great fun.

Curtin is a well-recognised university and confers credibility on the degree obtained – employers automatically recognise the high quality and standards of learning achieved. Curtin taught me to be independent, to think analytically and to be resourceful – practical skills that cannot be obtained from a textbook. These skills are more valuable than anything else, particularly in dealing with challenges on the job.

The thing I enjoyed most about living in Perth were the friends I met there, who have remained my best mates until today. The highlight of my time studying at Curtin were producing a sitcom, called 6-Pack, for our film and TV class, which was eventually aired on Channel 31.

I am currently working as a Communications Officer (Advocacy) for UNICEF Malaysia. My work involves mostly writing for, and producing educational & communications resources for our advocacy campaigns, eg the website, flyers and brochures, speeches and videos. I also engage with the media and civil society organisations to advocate for our issues. My plan for the future is to continue working in communications, specialising in science and development issues.
