Human Technologies

Research

Welcome from the Dean, Centre for Research and Graduate Studies

The Faculty of Humanities conducts a wide range of pure and applied research in the areas of the arts, social sciences, built environment and education. The list of Faculty research organisations below gives some indication of the diversity of our activities. Many of our staff members are undertaking collaborative research with national and international university partners, government organisations and industry. The Faculty is also actively involved in creative production in the areas of Art, Film and TV, Performance Studies and Literature and, in areas such as Architecture and Design in particular, research and creative production activities frequently overlap.

Research degrees at the Masters and PhD level are available in all areas of the Faculty and many also offer Masters and Doctorates in Creative Arts. Advice and assistance for both prospective and current postgraduate research students is available from the Humanities Graduate Studies Office. Curtin also operates a number of university-wide grant and fellowship programs. Further information on these opportunities can be obtained from Research and Development at Curtin.

In addition to the research and creative work being conducted in the research organisations listed below, the Faculty's component Schools, Built Environment, Art and Design, Education, Language Studies and Social Work and Media, Society and Culture can also be contacted for more specific information on their research and creative production activities.

The research and creative production activities of the Faculty are expanding rapidly, with perhaps the most notable recent development being the appointment of a new research team led by Professor Peter Newman to the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute.

In addition to this, the ARI publishes a number of journals and manages the Australian Public Intellectual Network (API) as well as Australian University Book.

Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities
The Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities is committed to increasing resiliency and community capacity through multi-disciplinary research partnerships which build the 'social' into the four pillars of sustainability - social, environmental, cultural and economic.
The Centre has extensive collaborative partnerships with both internal and external research providers, industry, government and non-government organisations and community groups.

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Australia, Asia and the Pacific (CASAAP)
The Centre for Advanced Studies in Australia, Asia and the Pacific (CASAAP) aims to understand the changing relationship between Australia and the countries of Asia and the Southwest Pacific. Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute
The Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute was established in January 2008, headed by Professor Peter Newman, and based in Fremantle. The idea of 'sustainability' in a wide range of human endeavour is a relatively new concept, but is rapidly becoming a key issue in public policy theory and practice. Sustainability Policy is also developing as a recognised profession and a multidisciplinary research field in its own right. CUSP will be a key player in the planned Sustainable Development Institute encompassing a broad range of Curtin research centres and teams involved in sustainability scholarship. It welcomes PhD and Masters by Research students, and is offering a coursework Masters in Sustainability.

Housing and Urban Research Institute of WA
The Housing and Urban Research Institute of Western Australia (HURIWA) is dedicated to conducting research and consulting work for a range of potential clients which include the private and public sectors.
