Urban & Regional Planning

Urban & Regional Planning

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses for those entering the urban and regional planning professions. These courses are accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia. Postgraduate studies are also available in urban design. A distinguishing characteristic of these courses is the use of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques in addressing environmental, social and design issues concerning the community. It is now widely accepted that successful human settlements must be properly planned and a range of statutory and non-statutory controls exist at all levels of government to protect the public interest in the development process. The involvement of individuals and community groups in the design preparation and implementation of plans is now considered vital to successful development outcomes.

The Department also is strongly engaged in research on Urban and Regional Planning design and transport issues. A major individual research report forms part of all taught courses. Doctoral Research students enrolled in the Department have investigated topics such as planning theory, heritage, legal appeals, public participation and environmental planning. Staff are actively involved in research institutes and centres concerned with transport planning, housing , tourism and improving the quality of urban places in Western Australia.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning forms part of the School of Built Environment.

The School is dynamic with strong international connections. The structure enables synergies between disciplines and it has over 25 full time academic staff, some of whom teach on an interdisciplinary basis in two or more of the School's Departments. Numerous industry based practitioners and guest lecturers also teach in the programme.

Commencing in 2007, the Department offered an Urban Design Graduate Program in collaboration with The University of Western Australia, delivered through the Urban Design Centre of Western Australia. This association provides a unique advantage for students to be exposed to the Centre's design consultancy and research projects, to gain from its affiliation with professional bodies and private practitioners and to work directly with communities and practicing design professional on significant current projects.
