Department of Art

The Bachelor of Arts (Art trains students to develop strong, lateral thinking minds, well versed in contemporary cultural concerns and capable of observing, interpreting, generating and manipulating visual imagery with skill and invention in a variety of media.

A fertile and efficient imagination is a powerful, transferable tool. This interdisciplinary program promotes astutely integrated conceptual and technical development in the growth of each individual's arts practice and a critical appreciation of arts practice in general.

The course encourages emerging artists to find an individual voice and provides the skills to channel their distinctive qualities into coherent visual images in a variety of media. Students may focus creative work in a range of single or multiple disciplines, including textiles, painting, material culture, printmedia, sculpture, jewellery and three dimensional design, electronic arts, drawing, ceramics, fashion, photography, installation, performance and audio-visual technologies.

The Department of Art is a major centre for visual arts education in Australia as well as internationally. Our students have access to first class facilities and technical support for practical work in a wide range of media. In addition to this our students have ample opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience in presenting art work to the public through the John Curtin Gallery; the largest and best equipped exhibition space of any University in Australia, and through the Department's links with local art agencies and institutions. The University has a well established Artist-in-Residence program that brings artists of international reputation to work on campus.
