Department of Art assessment criteria
The Department of Art evaluates student performance by continuous assessment and folio submissions, rather than by end of semester examinations.
Forms of Assessment of Major Studio Units
Ongoing Assessment comprises 60% of a Major Studio mark and is conducted within the Workshops progressively across the semester.
End of Semester Assessment which comprises 40% of the Major Studio mark is conducted by cross-discipline panels of assessors.
Criteria used by the Department for assessment
End of semester review and assessment guidelines
The review process is an essential part of the Department's teaching program and is conceived as an opportunity to give feedback to the student and as an open forum for the discussion of relevant academic issues, in the light of those raised by the artwork of the individual. It is important to remember that it is the artwork which is being assessed and not the personal characteristics of the student.
Students whose work deals with very personal material which they do not wish to discuss are encouraged to find ways of objectifying the information and moving it into territory of more general concern so that the group can still discuss their work. Staff and students are reminded that some students are very apprehensive about this process because artistic practice is often a response to deeply held personal convictions. Those in attendance at Reviews must help ensure that there is a supportive environment in which concerns can be raised and issues discussed openly and honestly without prejudice.
Students should ensure that presentations are clear, precise and supportive of the work completed. If in doubt as to whether to include some material, either discuss the options first with staff or simply include it as a seperate or adjunct material. False starts, less successful experiments etc. are often helpful in pointing to development and improvement, as well as affording useful cues upon which staff can provide helpful suggestions.
