Department Protocols

To enable the Department to function smoothly and for you to achieve the most successful result from your enrolment in the Department, we have identified the following protocols. Please read these carefully and ensure that you follow them in your dealings with fellow students, lecturers and Departmental staff.

Read enrolment notification very carefully. It is easy to enter a wrong number in a sequence of index numbers and find that you are enrolled in Podiatry, not Painting.

If you change your address or contact telephone number during the semester please make sure that it is changed on the system by using one of the Student Information Consoles placed around the University.

If you are unable to attend a class please contact the Lecturer. This is important on every occasion but it is ESSENTIAL if you are giving the Tutorial or presenting work for a review.

If you are late for a class please check in with your lecturer on arrival. In studio classes it is possible to miss an individual if they do not identify themselves.

It is also important to remember that if you miss vital information presented in class due to lateness or non-attendance it is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain that information from a fellow student or ask the lecturer for it at a later stage.

It is not the lecturers' responsibility to repeat information on demand to late arrivals.

When you enter any studio, workshop, class room or facility in the Department please introduce yourself to the person in charge. There have been many incidents of theft and general disruption from unwelcome and uninvited individuals entering Department facilities. We welcome all genuine and interested visitors to the Department but we are also keen to protect you and others from unnecessary disruption.

We are very proud of the cultural, ethnic and gender diversity within our Department. It is wonderful to have people from other cultures and experiences sharing their ideas and concerns with us. However, it is possible to inadvertently offend or embarrass someone if you are not aware of protocols they might expect. The nature of visual arts practice leads us to reveal a great deal about our cultural backgrounds and ourselves. This is very important and it requires us to be sensitive to the practices and protocols of others. If you have any doubts about whether it is appropriate to talk about certain issues, to discuss aspects of someone's practice or to interrelate in particular ways, the best strategy is to ask them whether or not it is appropriate.

Staff within the Department are very keen to assist you. To ensure that you are able to provide them with the time to attend to your requests please make appointments. They can be contacted directly, by leaving a message on their voice mail or by leaving a note on the door and providing them with a contact telephone number.
