Get the most out of your course
Attendance
Students within the university are encouraged to attend all sessions scheduled for their course of study. Students who gain most from the course are those who benefit from an on-going exchange of information with both staff and fellow students.
Learning and Teaching
The Department's philosophy of learning and teaching requires you to take a proactive approach to learning at all times. It is the student's responsibility to show evidence of an appropriate body of work, to seek out guidance and information, and to develop a level of autonomy to facilitate appropriate professional development. Self-directed Learning booklets are available for students to utilise.
Students enter this course from differing backgrounds, with varying expectations and desired outcomes. You will achieve best results by adopting the following recommendations:
Appropriate research methodologies
e.g. note taking, tape recorderings (with permission), drawing, experimentation, collections of materials, design and related commentary.
Equipment
All students will be required to purchase their own basic equipment for use within the studios. A lockable tool box for storage is a valuable investment. To avoid theft valuable personal belongings should be locked away securely or kept with you at all times. University insurance does not cover theft or damage of students' personal belongings (check personal home insurance for cover).
Preparation
Workshop supervisors have the right to ask ill-prepared students to remove themselves from the group. Your personal preparation includes appropriate clothing, adequate footwear, equipment, and personal research/experimentation.
Visual diary/Journal
It is recommended that all students use a visual diary/journal to record research and ideas relevant to their work practice. The diary will provide evidence of your research and development at assessment. Regular photographic documentation of your work is also strongly encouraged.
