Residency Report
Caroline Broadhead's residency was jointly hosted by the Department's of Art and Design and was timed to coincide with The Space-Between conference and exhibition. She was based in the Artist-in-Residence studio in the Department of Art but accessed facilities across both departments.
Caroline Broadhead is a highly regarded artist and an experienced academic and we were very pleased to be able to host a residency where students and staff benefited from the many qualities Caroline brought to the program. She conducted a workshop over two weeks, which was open to students from the Fashion & Textile Design course and the Department of Art students. The workshop centred on an analysis of 'the making' process and examined different methodologies for developing creative work. The workshop attracted a diversity of students.
In addition to the workshop Caroline made herself available for appointments to a broad range of students from both departments and these included first years to Honours students. In the second week of the residency she gave a 'Monday Special' lecture on her long-standing practice to a packed audience of staff and students and also contributed to the postgraduate seminar program on a discussion of post-graduate education in Europe.
Caroline Broadhead was one of the exhibitors included in The Space-Between exhibition and the residency allowed her to install the work for this show and participate in the post-conference public floor talks organised by the John Curtin Gallery which gives the public (plus students and staff) an opportunity to hear key artists in the exhibition talking about their particular pieces in the show. Many students and members of the public attended this series of floor talks. In addition, Caroline was one of the popular presenters at The Space-Between conference giving an interesting paper on 'The Dress' which addressed the space between art and fashion.
In a space between all the above activities Caroline worked in her studio in the Department of Art and accessed the photography facilities in the Department of Design. She produced a series of new photographic works and several students were involved in assisting her in this process.
This was a particularly successful residency partly due to Caroline's broad appeal to both staff and students across a range of interests, disciplines and mediums, but also because she generously made herself available in the short time-frame of the residency. The feedback from students who came into contact with Caroline was very positive and they all found her very approachable and a stimulating teacher.
