DOCEP Indigenous Housing Project

2nd year Multimedia Design student Jack Faulkner’s design for the DOCEP indigenous housing project was chosen as the winner. Jack will receive a cash prize as well as the offer of contract work at DOCEP to complete the project. This is a good example of how the Design department at BEAD is already implementing a key element of Curtin’s strategic plan, and how Multimedia Design technologies can be applied in innovative ways to serve the real needs of the community. It is also representative of the ongoing commitment by the Multimedia Design lecturing team to develop more relevant education programs and curriculum that meets industry standards through practical applications and outcomes, while assisting students to find work in their chosen field of expertise and skills. Jack’s work is indicative of all the hard work the curriculum designers have done to develop the new first year program in Multimedia Design Studies, now about to enter in third year of field trails and evaluation.

Curtin’s Health Sciences and WoundsWest Interactive Projects

Third year Multimedia Design students have completed a series of 2D and 3D animations for Curtin’s Health Sciences and WoundsWest. This involved producing a 3D interactive cross-sectional model of the human skin; a 3D avatar animation for a website to assist in ‘long-distance’ diagnosis of pressure points on the human body; and a 2D interactive Flash presentation for teaching medical practitioners about the complexities of human heart.
Again, these projects represent the Multimedia Design lecturing team’s commitment to introducing ‘real’ rather than simulated projects to better prepare graduates for professional future employment.

YOPDP-The Young Offender Personal Development Program

2nd year Multimedia Design students have been working on an interactive multimedia project for the Department of Corrective Services, titled The Young Offender Personal Development Program (YOPDP), this is a new Juvenile Justice initiative to be implemented in the Juvenile Remand and Detention Centres.
The aim is to introduce detainees to ideas and skills that may help them in breaking offending cycles and coping with the challenges they face in the community. The program consists of two streams: ‘Getting Out and Staying Out’ — this is directly related to general offending behavior, and ‘Prepared for Life’ that focuses more on general coping skills.
