Pathways of Study

Undergraduate, Bachelor Degree

These courses are designed for suitably qualified applicants to provide the initial preparation and certification to teach in a range of educational settings including, early childhood, primary secondary and technical. Other qualifications and experience may be acceptable in some cases for entry to courses, providing flexible entry arrangements for some applicants. These undergraduate courses provide the foundation skills and knowledge to enable progress to be made towards higher awards. The requirement for entry to the Masters degrees is satisfied by the completion of a four year undergraduate course.

Graduate, Certificates and Diplomas

Graduate Certificate courses are designed to develop skills in a specialised area that may or may not be directly related to that of an undergraduate degree. Some graduate certificates are designed for non-graduate entry and allow students to progress towards further postgraduate study.

A Graduate Diploma is a specialised, vocationally orientated award. Entry is normally based on a bachelor degree, however, exceptions may be made, dependent on relevant work experience and any prior learning. The Graduate Certificate enables professionals with non-education backgrounds to complete bridging requirements in education prior to higher education studies. The completion of this award is suitable for entry to a Masters degree.

Post Graduate,Masters and Doctoral Professional Masters programs are designed for those seeking contemporary knowledge without the necessity of undertaking a research program. The qualification is directly relevant to career environments, with the added benefit of networking with professional colleagues. Relevant teaching experience is recommended as useful basis for entry into this program. Provision may be made to allow students to take a bridging course or undertake other preliminary work as a requirement for entry to a Masters degree program where they do not hold appropriate qualifications. Students who do not possess formal entry qualifications may be recognised as having attained graduate status by virtue of academic record and/or relevant work experience. Provided their performance in this preliminary program meets the required standard, they could then qualify for admission to the Masters program.

Higher Degrees by Research including the Masters and Doctoral Degrees require that a student with a four year degree or a Graduate Diploma may be considered for admission to a Research degree. A student with a Masters degree, or a bachelor degree with First or Upper Second Class Honors from a recognised Australian or overseas tertiary institution, may be considered for admission to a doctoral degree. Approval is required from both the Head of Department and the Graduate Studies Committee, and is subject to the ability of the University to resource and supervise the proposed area of research.
