About the Series
Launched in 2009, the Strategic Flashlight research seminar and policy workshop series aims at providing a dedicated forum for government, business, academia, and the larger community in Western Australia and beyond to discuss and debate issues of immediate and longer term strategic significance for Australia and the region.
Topics include:
- Australian national security and defence;
- Australian foreign policy;
- Area analysis (East Asia, South Asia, West Asia and beyond);
- War and conflict;
- Terrorism and counter-terrorism;
- Maritime security;
- Energy security;
- Environmental security;
- Regionalism.

The 1st Annual National Security and Strategy Workshop Major Maritime Security Challenges in the Indian Ocean. This international workshop was organised by the International Relations and National Security program, School of Social Sciences and Asian Languages, in association with McCourt, Briggs and Partners. The event attracted over 60 participants, including representatives of government agencies and departments, private defence and security sector, non-governmental organisations, academia and students.

Guest Counter-Terrorism workshop The Art of Deterrence by Mr Tomer Benito (USA). The workshop was organised by the International Relations and National Security program, School of Social Sciences and Asian Languages, and the Department of Computing. Over 50 members of Perth-based government agencies, business, academia and students attended the event.

Guest seminar by Prof David Menashri, University of Tel Aviv, on contemporary developments in Iran. The seminar was organised jointly by the International Relations program, the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council and McCourt Briggs and Partners.

9 July
Guest seminar by Dr Ron Huisken, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Australian National University, Sino-American Nuclear Relations from 1950 and into the 21st Century. The seminar was organised jointly by the International Relations program and Future Directions International.
