Glossary of 'Webwords'

Internet: The linking together of two or more computer networks is called an 'internet'. 'The Internet' is the global connection of such networks. Also called 'the net', cyberspace', 'the information superhighway

World Wide Web: The client-server system of the Internet designed to allow distribution of information between computers. Uses hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). Also called WWW, W3 or the Web.

Word processing package: A software program dedicated to processing text

Web browser, Browser: Software program that lets you surf the Web. Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer are the most widely used.

Search engine: A web site on which you can search for keywords on Web pages. Every search engine works differently and will produce different results for the same search data. Yahoo is one of the most popular search engines, but there are many others.

e-mail, Email - electronic mail: Text message transmitted over the Internet from the email address of one person to another.

Upload: Sending files (information in the form of text, graphics, video, audio) over the Internet from your computer to another computer.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator: The address of any website or webpage on the World Wide Web.

Download: The transfer of information from a server to your computer.

Site, Web site: Any place on the Web. Can be a single page or a group of pages, usually called a 'website'.

Page, Web page: A single document on the Web.
