Get involved

While you’re studying for your Curtin Humanities degree, there are plenty of ways for you to get more involved with your course and your passions, all while developing your professional and personal expertise.

One of these ways is by participating in a Curtin Extra program.

A Curtin Extra certificate – which formally recognises your participation in approved co-curricular programs – will be provided to you upon your graduation and is issued under the authority of the Academic Registrar at Curtin.

School of Education

Curtin’s School of Education currently offers three Curtin Extra programs.

Professional Related Experiences

Professional related experiences are voluntary activities undertaken by pre-service teachers to develop and use skills and knowledge directly related to future work as an educator. They are in addition to and complement required, assessed coursework activities and formally assessed professional experience placements.

Teacher Invest: Professional Development Program (Level One) | Teacher Identity

This program complements the School of Education’s Bachelor of Education courses and is designed to support strongly performing pre-service teachers build their confidence, personal style and leadership capabilities.

Eligibility to apply

  • Enrolled in a Curtin Bachelor of Education course
  • Have 300+ credit points of unit completions (12+ units)
  • Have a course weighted average of 70+
  • This program is limited to 25 places. There are no direct costs to selected students.
  • Currently this program is open to Curtin Perth (Bentley) students only.

Program content

The intention of this program is to assist aspirational, strongly performing students to develop robust teacher identities in terms of their capabilities, commitment and connection. The program has three components that combine internal and external professional development opportunities: directed reading and online modules, a full-day workshop, and self-determined learning of particular interest and relevance, undertaken through an external agency and/or online provision and/or Curtin School of Education’s Professional Learning Hub. This will have been pre-approved by the program coordinator.

  • Nominated Pre-reading and Online Modules (4 hours)
  • Compulsory Professional Development One Day Workshop (6 hours)
  • Other pre-approved Professional Development workshops and activities (10 hours)

Teacher Invest: Professional Development Program (Level Two) | Profession & Career

This program complements the School of Education’s Bachelor of Education courses and is an ‘industry facing’ program designed to support strongly performing pre-service teachers consolidate their professional teaching and leadership capabilities as they prepare to enter the teaching profession.

Eligibility to apply

  • Enrolled in a Curtin Bachelor of Education course
  • Have 500+ credit points of unit completions (20+units)
  • Have a course weighted average of 70+
  • Have sound Practicum performance.
  • This program is limited to 25 places. There are no direct costs to selected students.
  • Currently this program is open to Curtin Perth (Bentley) students only.

Program content

The intention of this program is to assist aspirational, strongly performing students deepen their capabilities in relation to broad professional understandings and leadership; and to establish networks in the wider Education sector to enhance their employability profile. The program has three components that combine internal and external professional development opportunities: directed reading and online modules, a full-day workshop, and self-determined learning of particular interest and relevance, undertaken through an external agency and/or online provision and/or Curtin School of Education’s Professional Learning Hub. This will have been pre-approved by the program coordinator.
